Newborn Session Guide

Timing is key

When to schedule: Newborn sessions are best within the first 5-14 days after birth. During this time, babies are sleepiest and easier to pose, so book in your session around the 2nd trimester.

However, if you feel like you've missed the newborn stage, please don't worry. It's never too late to capture your baby. Every age is worth remembering, they just might be a little less sleepy and more curious. And that curiosity? It's just as beautiful to document.

Session duration: Sessions typically last 1.5-2.5 hours to allow for feeding, cuddling and settling time.

Preparing your baby

Feeding before your session: A well fed baby is a sleepy and content baby. Try to feed your little one right before arriving or as soon as we start.

Sleepy baby hack: You can try to keep your baby awake for 1-1.5 hours before the session to ensure they’re ready for a nap. Please do not stress if you can't!! A bath, diaper change or some quiet interaction can naturally extend wakefulness without causing distress.

What to do if baby falls asleep in the car

Stay calm: A car nap is ok. Newborns have unpredictable sleep patterns and I'm prepared for that.

Transfer gently: When you arrive, leave your baby in their car seat and bring them in without disturbing them. If they're still asleep when we start, I can begin with natural posed setups that work best while they're asleep. If baby wakes, that's absolutely fine too. We'll take breaks for feeding or soothing and capture both awake and asleep moments.

Avoid overthinking sleep: Newborn sessions are designed around your baby's natural rhythms. There's no need to stress about keeping them awake or asleep at the perfect time. We can just go with the flow :). Newborn sessions are inherently flexible.

What to avoid if breastfeeding

Certain foods can cause discomfort or gassiness in your baby. If possible, avoid these 24 hours before your session - spicy foods, dairy products, caffeine, gassy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower or onions.

Vaccinations

If your baby recently received vaccinations, they may be more irritable or sensitive. Try to reschedule the session at least 1-2 days after their appointment for their comfort.

What to bring

Plenty of diapers and wipes (I do also provide wipes if you forget).

A pacifier (even if you don't use it often, it can sometimes help soothe during posing).

Bottles or breastfeeding supplies if needed.

Neutral, comfortable clothing if you plan to be in the photos (Small selection of dresses in my Client Wardrobe that you are welcome to use).

You may want to bring snacks, but I do also provide that as well as water, tea or coffee.

If you have something special or meaningful that you would like included, you are more than welcome to bring it along. Please just let me know, so I can plan ahead.

What to wear

For baby - No special outfits are necessary - just a diaper and simple sleep suit that can easily be removed. Avoid clothes that need to be taken off over their head. I'll provide wraps, blankets etc.

For parents and siblings - Choose neutral, soft colours without bold patterns or logos. I have a small selection of dresses for Mum's to choose from. Make sure you have no chipped or bright nail polish and clean nails as your hands will often be front and centre in your images.

During the session

Relax :)! Babies cry, need feeding or take time to settle - it's all part of the process.

I have a TV in the studio, so once siblings have finished their photos, they can relax and stay entertained while we focus on the newborn session.

The studio will be warm to keep your baby comfortable and white noise can be provided.

After your session

You'll receive your gallery within 2 weeks, where you can select your favourites based on your package. If your package includes prints or Polaroid, I'll arrange delivery once your final images are selected.

If you have any questions at all, I'm just a message away.

I can't wait to photograph your little one and create keepsakes you'll cherish forever.

With love,

Ella
